Arek Surveying provides clients with a wide range of surveying services, as well as guidance with a FEMA flood elevation certificate. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires homeowners to purchase flood insurance policies if their homes are located within certain flood zones. So please, do not hesitate to reach out today for more information about our surveying options. You can call our office and speak to a surveying professional. When you call, we can provide you with all of the various details for the upcoming project.

A flood elevation survey includes:

  • elevation above mean sea level taken at building corners
  • sidewalks
  • building first floor and lowest floor
  • location of the building (longitude and latitude)
  • flood zone designation

These are aspects all going into receiving a FEMA flood elevation certificate. It is vital that buildings in dangerous areas have the proper certification in order to best combat dangerous weather circumstances should they arise. In relation to this certificate is a raising program survey, which we can also provide. Raising awareness for flood risks is the main objective of a raising program survey.

FEMA Flood Elevation Certificate Importance

The FEMA Flood Elevation Certificate is an important aspect of the National Flood Insurance Program. It is used to certify buildings located in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA). This is to determine the proper flood insurance premium rate for the building and to support a request for a Letter of Map Amendment. Only a licensed land surveyor, engineer, or architect can complete a FEMA flood elevation certificate.

As mentioned, these certificates are to enhance safety in flood zones. An area that the government studies and determines to be the probability of flooding due to intensive storms or coastal regions is considered a flood zone. The probability and/or frequency of anticipated flood conditions are determined by these studies and can range in severity. They don't always have to be extremely hazardous, because there are areas of minimal flooding that fit into the spectrum, too. A flood elevation certificate is used to gauge which areas are more prone to flooding than others. Understanding which areas are worse than others is helpful to those living in the area.
