Understanding Wetland Delineation Surveying

About Water Delineation

A Wetland Delineation Survey is a survey that will show the horizontal limits and size of wetland regions. The phrase "wetland delineation” is used to describe the process of conducting field surveys in order to establish the exact borders of a wetland. The regulation definition of a wetland, as well as any additional criteria, are used by a wetland delineator. Wetlands are ultimately defined, mapped, and delineated by their vegetation.

At the end of the day, delineation is the act of locating the wetland or watercourse’s boundary to help define aspects of the area. Border delineation also entails describing the wetland or watercourse’s functions and values in terms of its physical location in the landscape. Regulations at all levels of government use wetland delineation in order to determine a wetland’s location and physical boundaries. When it comes to wetlands delineations, it is also necessary to determine the boundaries of the wetland areas before making a final decision about who has jurisdiction over it. This final procedure determines which bodies of water within a project’s limits fit the definition of “Waters of the United States.”

3 Characteristics of Wetlands

The Fish and Wildlife Service, the body that is responsible for assessing the impact on fish and wildlife of projects, defines a wetland as having three characteristics:

  1. Hydrophytes are found. This is a type of plant that thrives only in or near water and can be found on the land at least occasionally.
  2. Hydric soil is present and is the dominating subsoil, layer or is found beneath the surface.
  3. Each year, a different non-soil substrate is used that is soaked or partially submerged in water at some point throughout its growing season.

In general, wetland habitats are areas of land where specific types of vegetation and animal life can thrive due to the soil type and long-term presence of water in or on the soil.

What Is Involved in A Wetland Delineation?

For a simple wetlands delineation, a trained specialist, such as the ones at Arek Surveying, will gather and document the wetland boundaries based on land-use maps, aerial photographs, topographic maps, soil surveys, and any other pertinent information. Additional information about the potential impact of the project may be needed for approval. And other types of delineations are more complex and will require more work. But all in a day's work with the best surveying team in the greater NYC area on your side.

For the tougher types of delineations, our surveyors will first survey the land, estimate the wetland area (often called “buffer”) using local knowledge and existing maps, and determine which wetland’s boundaries encompass all or most of the area being considered for the construction project. The number of different types of wetland delineation often varies, as do their specific requirements and standards. Our team will get to the bottom of any job.

Arek Surveying is a licensed and certified surveying company with years of experience in the field, which extends to the performance of a wetlands delineation location surveying. Our services are available to many in the greater NYC area, which includes the five boroughs, Long Islands, and upstate New York. A wetlands delineation location survey is one that needs to be completed when construction work is to be done on or near a site containing defined wetlands. Depending on your local, state, or federal regulations, wetlands are usually classified as areas that are completely inundated with water more than two (2) weeks during the growing season.

If you have questions regarding the wetlands themselves, then contact your local or state Conservation Commission or Wetlands Regulatory Commission to determine the particular definition for wetlands in your given geographical region. If you have any questions about needing a wetlands delineation survey, please contact our office today.
